OUR NEW COFFEE BAGS

A better choice for quality, sustainability, and what works

After years of trial and reflection, we’ve made the move to new coffee packaging: bags made from 70% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic.

This decision is based on research, conversations with waste experts, and a commitment to doing things properly. It’s not about appearances. It’s about what works.

Our Journey So Far

When we first started selling coffee, we used paper bags with a separate compostable inner bag. At the time, it felt like the most responsible approach we could take — using simple, low-impact materials that aligned with our values.

But as we reflected more deeply on our packaging footprint, we realised this system was creating more waste, not less. Two separate materials meant double the production, double the disposal challenge, and no clear recycling route for either. So we moved to integrated kraft bags with a built-in compostable barrier. These sealed better, looked clean and minimal, and helped preserve freshness.

It felt like progress. But when we began asking tougher questions, meeting with Devon County Council, consulting waste experts, and speaking to other independent businesses, we discovered a flaw.

There are no facilities in our area that process compostable packaging. Even nationally, the infrastructure is extremely limited. Most compostable bags end up in general waste and are incinerated. Some even disrupt recycling streams, contaminating otherwise recyclable materials.

We realised we were producing something that sounded good but wasn’t working in practice.

Why PCR Plastic?

Our new bags are made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE 4), with 70% of that coming from recycled consumer waste.

They offer several clear advantages:

  • Recycled and recyclable. These bags use plastic that has already been in circulation and can be recycled again through soft plastics collection points at most UK supermarkets.

  • Better for the coffee. They’re airtight, durable, and excellent at preserving the flavour, texture, and natural sweetness of our roasts.

  • Compatible with real-world systems. They can be processed within the waste and recycling infrastructure that already exists.

  • Future-ready. Kerbside soft plastics collection is starting to roll out nationally. These bags are ready for that shift.

This is the most functional and sustainable format available to us right now.

The Compostable Illusion

We understand why compostable packaging feels like the better option. We felt the same. But the reality is different.

Unless you have access to a commercial composting facility that accepts packaging waste — and very few do — compostable bags simply don’t break down. They can’t go in food waste bins. They’re not accepted with plastics recycling. And they often create more problems than they solve.

Devon County Council advised us directly to move away from compostable packaging. We took that advice seriously.

A Conscious Step Forward

This isn’t a compromise. It’s a confident decision based on what works — for our coffee, for our customers, and for the environment.

We’ll keep listening, learning, and improving. But right now, this is the most effective and responsible packaging we can offer. And we’re proud of it.
